Fourth of July STOP-DWI Crackdown

This is the fourth of seven STOP-DWI crackdown periods across the state this year. During the enforcement wave, local law enforcement agencies statewide will be out in force, utilizing sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, to deter drunk driving and ensure the safety of our roadways. Motorists are reminded that driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 or higher will put them over the limit and under arrest.

MOTORISTS REMINDED TO SHARE THE ROAD SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY
GTSC Produces Innovative "Be Smart. Share the Road." Commercial

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today announced a new highway safety campaign reminding all New York State motorists to share the road safely and responsibly especially with large trucks, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. The federally funded campaign includes innovative television and radio commercials as well as soon-to-be released Internet materials titled "Be Smart. Share the Road." The commercials were produced through the collaborative efforts of the twelve state agencies that comprise the GTSC.

AGENCIES CELEBRATE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEAT BELT LAW
New York State Was First In The Nation To Have a Primary Seat Belt Law

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today along with other traffic safety partners celebrated the 25th anniversary of the seat belt law being signed. New York was the first state in the nation to have a primary seat belt law.

DRIVERS URGED TO SHARE THE ROAD WITH SLOW-MOVING VEHICLES
April is Slow-Moving Vehicle Safety Month

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) along with Department of Agriculture and Markets Commissioner Patrick Hooker, representatives from the Department of Transportation and the State Police as well as safety advocates from the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) and the Future Farmers of America today reminded motorists to share the road with slow-moving vehicles with safety and courtesy as well as reminded farmers of several changes to the State Vehicle and Traffic Law regarding slow-moving vehicle (SMV) emblems and lighting. Governor David Paterson has proclaimed April as "Slow Moving Vehicle Safety" month.

FARMERS REMINDED OF CHANGES TO SLOW MOVING VEHICLE LAWS
Slow Moving Vehicle and Lighting Changes Went into Effect Jan. 1, 2009

New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker, along with members of the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today reminded members of the farm community of several recent changes made by the Legislature in regards to the use of Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) emblems and lighting. The changes to the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law went into effect on January 1, 2009.

GOVERNOR PATERSON ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $31 MILLION
IN HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANTS
Federal Funding for Nearly 750 State, Local and Not-for-Profit Traffic Safety Initiatives

Governor David A. Paterson today announced that New York will receive more than $31 million in grants for highway safety programs across the State. The Federal highway safety grants will be distributed by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) to nearly 750 State, local and not-for-profit agencies to conduct highway and traffic safety initiatives aimed at increasing driver education, new enforcement efforts to combat drinking and driving, passenger restraint enforcement, aggressive driving and excessive speeding prevention, and bicycle and pedestrian safety, among others.
