GTSC ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY 2009 HIGHWAY FATALITY DATA
Six Percent Decrease in Traffic Fatalities; Reductions in Motorcycle and Bicycle Fatalities

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today announced that preliminary crash data from 2009 indicates a more than six percent decrease in overall traffic fatalities, a more than seventeen percent decrease in motorcycle fatalities and a more than twenty-nine percent decrease in bicycle fatalities.

MOTORISTS, PASSENGERS REMINDED TO BUCKLE UP
"Buckle Up New York - Click It or Ticket" Enforcement Mobilization Underway

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee was joined by Tom Louizou, Regional Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Region 2 at Windsor High School in Binghamton today to launch the "Buckle Up New York Click It or Ticket" enforcement mobilization for 2010 which began on Monday, May 24, and runs through Sunday, June 6. Also participating in today's press conference, the purpose of which is to remind motorists and passengers to always wear their seat belts, were: Major Kevin G. Molinari of the New York State Police; Corinne Barnes, Advisor for the Windsor Chapter of SADD; and Sarah Freed, a Windsor High School student and member of the Windsor Chapter of SADD.

AGENCIES ANNOUNCE RESULTS OF FIRST DISTRACTED DRIVING ENFORCEMENT PROJECT WAVE
2,300 Tickets Issued in Syracuse For Talking on a Hand-Held Cell Phone Or Texting While Driving

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) along with Governor Paterson's Central New York Regional Representative Daniel Young and Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler today announced the results of the first Distracted Driving Enforcement Project wave which was conducted in Syracuse from April 8-17.

MOTORISTS REMINDED OF DANGERS OF DROWSY DRIVING
Sleep Loss a Possibility as Daylight Saving Time Begins on March 14

— March 11, 2010

Commissioner David J. Swarts of the Department of Motor Vehicles and Chair of the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today used the occasion of the upcoming switch to Daylight Saving Time to remind motorists of the dangers of drowsy driving. Daylight Saving Time goes into effect this year on Sunday, March 14.

GOVERNOR PATERSON ANNOUNCES AWARD OF HIGHWAY SAFETY GRANTS

— January 28, 2010

Governor David A. Paterson today announced the award of more than $30 million in federal grants to highway safety programs throughout the State. The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) will distribute the federal grants to 769 initiatives that promote highway and traffic safety. The recipients include State agencies, local groups and not-for-profit organizations.
